* This information applies to SRECs generated in New Jersey only.
As an owner of an installed solar electric system, you'll be provided instructions on how to establish an online account with the Generation Attributes Tracking System (GATS). Once the solar system is generating electricity, GATS measures and records the amount of kWh being produced by the system during each month.
Note: SRECs are not affected by the savings you receive on your energy bill.
Based on the total amount of electricity generated by the end of the month, GATS will create 1 SREC for every 1,000 kWh produced. The SRECs are deposited into the electronic account you set up in Step 1.
Once SRECs are deposited into your account, you can sell them through one of the following methods:
- Spot Market
- Long Term Sales Contract
Utilizing an online SREC purchasing/trading system, you'll be able to find a broker interested in buying your SRECs. Once a price has been agreed upon, the SRECs are transferred to the broker's account in exchange for cash.
Revenue from the sale of SRECs can be used to amortize the cost of the solar system.
Brokers acquire SRECs from multiple solar systems, then sell them to utility companies who need to meet their Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) requirements.
