Solar Energy
The total solar energy absorbed by Earth's atmosphere, oceans, and land masses is approximately 3,850,000 exajoules (EJ) per year, which is more energy in one hour than the world uses in one year. Furthermore, the amount of solar energy that reaches the surface of the planet in one year is about double the amount of energy that can ever be obtained from all of the Earth's fossil fuels (coal, oil, natural gas, and mined uranium) combined.
Considering the current volatility of energy costs, deteriorating state of our country's power infrastructure, and record heat waves and violent storms being contributed to climate change, we can no longer ignore the fact that we need to take advantage of solar energy. It won't be easy to turn away from the fossil fuels we've been using all our lives and solar energy does require a large, up-front investment, but imagine the alternative: sky-high energy prices, countries fighting over fossil fuels, rolling brownouts and blackouts, daily air quality warnings, extreme weather activity , etc. These aren't meant to be scare tactics, but rather points to stress the urgency of our situation.
